Terra Kaffe
Terra Kaffe creates super-automatic espresso machines that help people experience the joy of coffee every day. As a follow-up to their beloved TK-01, Terra Kaffe worked with Ammunition to create the iconic design of the TK-02 which needed next generation packaging to match.
Terra Kaffe’s values extend far into TK-02’s packaging as well. In addition to safely, efficiently, and reliably carrying the product to its new owner, the act of opening and using the package is as considerate as the product itself. The packaging structure has been optimized for compact, lightweight shipping efficiency and low-energy, recoverable materials.

Considering every aspect of the out-of-box experience we mapped out each user touchpoint to align the team’s goals and evaluate design concepts objectively. We created in-house prototypes to test how users would handle a box of this size and safely lift the product out of the packaging. Working with Terra Kaffe’s in-house teams, we evaluated vendor-produced samples, adjusted for manufacturing limitations, cost restraints, and supply chain considerations.
To adequately protect the 30 lb. package and allow for quick responses to product manufacturing adjustments, die-cut PE foam plank was used as the necessary cushioning material. By using a separate accessory box, the number of individual components was minimized which streamlines the pre-packout process, resulting in faster packout times and reduced labor costs.

The details
To surprise and delight customers during the unboxing process, a bag of coffee selected at checkout is included in the same box as their TK-02. Making this possible required a thorough understanding of the supply chain process and coordination with packout teams. An external “coffee pocket” and internal coffee bag insert were designed to accommodate this addition. The side-loading external door (coffee pocket) was created to customize the secondary shippers with a unique bag of beans while keeping them palletized. The door is sealed with an artwork label, and the TK-02 is ready to be shipped with everything needed for costumers to start brewing.
